Front Porch: Spring basket tutorial...

I would really like spring to make an appearance sometime soon. I had thought spring was here last week; we had sunny days with some clouds and rain and then BOOM! I woke up Saturday morning to this:

Clearly the weather is a little confused as to what it’s supposed to be doing or what season we’re in.

After seeing this cute idea from Fearfully & Wonderfully Made, I decided that my front porch would benefit from a little spring color.

So off I went to… say it with me… the Dollar Store (they’re going to know me by name soon). I came home with this:

For six bucks I picked up a cute little basket, a Styrofoam square, 2 bunches of hydrangea flowers (1 purple and 1 cream), and some ‘filler’: a grass looking thing and another thing with white doo dads on it.

I put some paper in the bottom of the basket to raise up the Styrofoam square.

I added some floral foam that I already had (also courtesy of the Dollar Store) on either side of the Styrofoam to stabilize it.

I took the leftover ‘greenery’ from this completely awesome lamp project and after trimming the stems with wire cutters, placed them all over the basket. You can see in the picture that I also used Spanish moss (that grey-brown stuff in the basket) but I don’t think I needed to; once the basket was finished, I couldn’t see the Spanish moss at all.

Next, I cut all the individual stems off the hydrangeas and white doo dad ball looking things. I know! I know! I apologize but I truly have no idea what else to call them : )

I stuck each stem in at random until I liked how they looked:

For the final step, I took the grass looking bit and fanning it out, I stuck it in the very back of the basket

And now I have some spring on my front porch:

Now that my front door looks great, I really need to take care of the rest of the porch!

Hmmm... yep, that needs some help ; )
